What Is Peace?

I find it interesting to see more and more people flashing two fingers in the air and saying, "Peace." I wonder if this is an action that people think about, or if it is mimicry. I also wonder if people consider what the word 'peace' means.

The definitions for 'peace' tend to revolve around the cessation of war. There is a great need for this type of peace around the globe. In the past the world governments and militaries have always told their citizens that war is necessary to create peace, yet war still runs rampant after thousands of years. Therefore, i would hope that those calling out for peace as an end to war think about what it is to be peaceful. I would love for these people to imagine how we all must act to produce an atmosphere of peace.

The other dominant definitions for 'peace' deal with ending commotion and public unrest. War is removed from this equation, but i feel that it is just as important. I see this definition of 'peace' as a smaller component required to ensure a greater, global scale of peace. That is, the way communities act towards one another will eventually reach out to the matters between nations. And so, i would hope that those flashing their two fingers include this localized desire for peace.

A definition for the word 'peace' that generally only receives a single dictionary entry is one that i find to be the most important of all. Personal peace - that blissful calm within. This is the type of peace that i think is the driving force behind all other forms of peace. When one's thoughts and everyday actions carry peacefulness, it invariably extends to their dealings within the community, which can then ultimately reach out to touch nations. This peace is one that i would absolutely hope is being desired by anyone holding out their two fingers.

I firmly believe that our thoughts and intentions generate ripples of energy that extend outwards from everyone. I firmly believe that these thought/intention ripples affect everyone they encounter. This is the reason that, to me, placing conscious intention in this sign of peace is important. Along with the way the Universe manifests things (such as with the Law of Attraction) this strong desire for three types of peace will eventually circle back, generating that same peace in us.

(Many others are finding ways to promote a group effort for spreading peace. Among them are the creators of the Vow of Non-violence movement and the United Earth Project. I would urge everyone to see what they are about, and consider taking the vow.)

So let us all wish peace for one another;
peace within, peace in the community, and peace across the Earth.

Peace and Love
